On the very same day that Fabric’s license was revoked, Berlin’s iconic Berghain, the techno cathedral itself, was deemed to be a venue of high cultural significance and thus now pays the same amount of tax as the concert halls where you might find the Berliner Philharmoniker.īoth clubs were fighting against bureaucracy, and against the importunate opinions of those who think electronic music is somehow not culturally significant.

Having recently moved to Berlin, it’s been amazing to be in a place that actually celebrates the fact that clubbing & partying are a widespread part of their culture & tourism. That is seeming less likely when every passing day sees another nail hammered into the coffin-lid of London’s slowly dying nightlife. The fact that I got to hear some of my own tunes through the system that made me fall in love with house & techno in the first place was amazing, and I dreamt of holding an EP or album launch party there one day. The pictures attached to this post show me in the DJ booth of Room 1, and also standing in the central focal point of their amazing Martin Audio sound system. Conspiracy theories have been flying in every direction, based upon the Metropolitan Police Force’s decision to name the undercover operation within the club “ Operation Lenor” (’Lenor’ being a brand of Fabric softener) and plans for expensive local redevelopment. I was shattered by the recent closure of my favourite London nightclub, Fabric. On the playa they call me Chemical Adam, and you’ll usually find me somewhere near to the largest, loudest soundsystem.ĮLECTRONIC MUSIC = CULTURE: My thoughts on the closure of Fabric If you’re going to be at Kiez Burn or Nowhere, come and find me if you’d like to try it out. I can’t wait to see groups of trippy hippies spinning out as they enter a new sonic dimension together. It is designed to simulate the auditory hallucinations induced by diisopropyltryptamine (DiPT) for a small group of people, around 4 or 5 at a time, each wearing a pair of headphones and all hearing the same shared augmented reality soundscape. It’s built in Pure Data so that it can run on a Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone inside a sculpture, but this will also enable me to run it in PdParty~ on my iPad, which is already housed in a dustproof & waterproof enclosure so that it can survive the desert.

I’m taking a holiday away from Max MSP, and working on the Pure Data patch that forms the inner workings of my augmented reality sound art installation “Headfuck” which will be accompanying me to Kiez Burn and Nowhere - two Burning Man regional events in Germany & Spain. Time to move to another platform? Or do we take it in stride, use it as another way to separate our ideas from the notions of ownership & monetization, and carry on? Seems to me like this might turn YouTube into a stagnating echo-chamber of few great producers, surrounded by crapfactories that can churn out terrible yet seemingly endless content… Expect to see a lot more rambly vlog-style content from your YouTube favorites and the appearance of fewer new channels, since that’s what we’ve all basically been told they want there. This was due to the change in eligibility requirements for the YouTube Partner Programme which seems set to shift the type of content creation that will be rewarded away from quality, and instead towards quantity. However, feeling slightly conflicted about the fact that it’s sponsored & hosted by YouTube, since this week my own YouTube channel was demonetized along with the channels of so many others. Speaking on a panel at Roundhouse Rising tomorrow, on a topic that is very dear to my heart: Music, Accessibility, Technology & Disability.
